Richmond Texas Photographer Baby Boy Session
Recently I was featured by Voyage Houston! You can read about my studio and how I got started in newborn photography and my interview here.
Kimberly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I believe that photography is truly one of the most precious ways to hold on to our memories.
Growing up I remember looking through old photo albums and feeling so complete buy learning and knowing little details about my parents and grandparents…. things that they may not have told me and things that they may have forgotten.
When I was younger, my family moved from Canada to Texas away from all our family. Looking through old pictures and current ones was one way that I could connect with my relatives who lived so far away.
During my high school years, my all- time passion and goal was to be a professional dancer, telling a story through movement. After getting accepted into some prestigious dance companies, I suffered an accident resulting in traumatic multiple fractures in my foot, which threatened my ability to pursue dance as a career. Deeply frustrated, I began searching for other artistic means of expressing my passion, and after my son was born, I found that fulfillment in photography.
That fulfillment I received from photography grew even more after the birth of my first son. By practicing more and more with lighting and angles with my 3 boys, I became much more confident behind the camera. I decided to start my own photography business to capture all the love and joy within families.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have been very blessed that my business has grown at a pace that hasn’t been too overwhelming. Understanding all the business aspects like taxes, insurance, bookkeeping, client management, contracts etc. was really difficult in the beginning but thankfully I have a really great network of photographers that helped me along the way. Wishing I had gone to college for business lol!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kimberly Burleson Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in Newborn and maternity photography but will take on family shoots as well because I love seeing my clients come back with their growing babies! For my newborn work, I most known for all the rich colors and interesting textures I use in each session.
I am very proud that I have continued to grow a successful company and still keep a great relationship with the families I work with. Strong client relationship is one of the most important aspects in my business.
Timelessness and honesty is my goal for every session. I don’t use distracting elements or colors in my sessions because I want the focus to be on the family or newborn not the props.
My family sessions are full of energy and movement. I am not the traditional portrait photographer. I love laughing smiles, silly faces, and honest family interactions.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My next goal for my business is to purchase an old building and convert it into a rustic/ unique studio. I am looking for the perfect building to fulfill my needs and love for perfectly imperfect walls, floors etc.
